UNDERSTANDING INSURANCE For the Bed & Breakfast or Country Inn Innkeeper Certificate of Insurance A Certificate of Insurance is issued by an insurance agent to offer proof of insurance. Whenever you have an independent contractor (for example: a caterer, cleaning service, window washer) perform work for you, obtain a Certificate of Insurance from them listing you as certificate holder. Since the certificate is issued by the insurance agent, you will be sure the information is correct. By being listed as certificate holder, you will be notified if the independent contractor's insurance coverage lapses. A Certificate of Insurance is the only sure way of knowing that the independent contractor has Liability and Workers Compensation insurance. If the independent contractor does not have insurance, you may become liable for his actions. You may also become liable for any injury sustained by his employees.
